Border Patrol seizes drugs on Amtrak train in Montana

HAVRE, Mont. The U.S. Border Patrol seized marijuana and hashish with an estimated total value of more than $10,000 from a suspect at the Amtrak station in Havre.
Kristian Borrud of Beaver Dam, Wis., born in 1980, was arrested last Wednesday. He was being held in the Hill County Detention Center this morning on $100,000 bond.
In a press release received by the Havre Daily News Monday afternoon, the Border Patrol said that agents were conducting transportation checks with a drug detection dog June 17. The dog alerted the agents to a piece of luggage owned by Borrud. The luggage contained 2.96 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $2,368, the release said. Amtrak employees turned over a second piece of luggage owned by the suspect. In that luggage the agents found seven ounces of hashish with an estimated street value of $8,700, the release said.
The suspect was detained, turned over to the Tri-Agency Safe Trails Task Force and booked into the Hill County Detention Center, the release said. Mike Emge, Border Patrol spokesman, said that use of the dog units to detect narcotics is typical during inspections of the train.
Its something we do on almost a daily basis, he said, adding that the primary focus of the inspections of the passenger trains is for immigration purposes but also for drug detection.
