GIA Dialogue

Secure your future:
Increase benefits in 2000

As the new millennium and the 21st century unfold, we are even more aware that the world in which we live is one of constant change.

Many of these changes taking place, or that will take place, are beyond our control. However, some changes can be controlled by you and me either through legislation or at the ballot box.

For example: In 1998, unions had a huge impact on possibly five or six congressional races. This just serves as an example of what we can do to affect change. It is important that we participate. All of our BLE-GIA families must be registered to vote and take advantage of the opportunity to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

Right now, it is important that we participate in getting legislation passed that would affect our lifestyle enormously. We need to contact our congressional delegations and request that they support and/or co-sponsor H.R. 3091. This bill would guarantee up to three consecutive (but optional) days off for railroad workers after they work, or are available to work, for up to seven consecutive days. This resolution is long overdue. Please contact your member of Congress now.

We must keep a watchful eye on the Railroad Retirement Board's Spousal Minimum benefit issue. As I write, this issue is still in committee. The sub-committee, consisting of management, labor, retirement groups and the Railroad Retirement Board, has not reached an agreement. As soon as they reach an agreement, the issue will be sent back to Congress for the lawmaking process. Until then, we must wait and be prepared to act when the time comes. When the time to act arrives, we need everyone to participate. This is something that will affect all of us sooner or later. Please join us in our effort to increase spousal benefits.

With us, family comes first. We will continue to work for better working and safety conditions that will ultimately bring about lifestyle improvements for all of us.

The turning point for our GIA in the 21st century could be determined by our willingness to take advantage of sweeping incentives such as those mentioned above as we work to make them a reality.

I am excited about the year 2000 and what lies ahead for the GIA. By working together, we can make it a good year -- as we strive to make a difference!
