Peters spent an 'interesting' 41-years on the railroad

For 60 years, Brother Wallace C. Peters has been a proud member of BLE Division 5 in Los Angeles.

Brother Peters began his career as a laborer for the Southern Pacific in 1934 out of Colton, Calif. He went firing for the S.P. in 1936 and was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1942. He joined the BLE in February 1942. His father, Cornelius, was a machinist.

Brother Peters made his last run on January 15, 1975 as an engineer on a yard switch engine in Los Angeles, capping what he characterized as an "interesting" a 41-1/2 year career.

Peters and his late wife, Margaret, have one child, David, and one grandchild. During his retirement, he has remained active in his church and Masonic lodge.

Brother Peters lives at: 205 S. Bonita Street, Santa Maria, Calif. 93454.


Ottosen celebrates 50 years in the BLE

Brother Ottosen receives a 50 year pin from Chairman Luebke

Brother Carl O. "Bud" Ottosen of BLE Division 176 (Adams, Wisc.) was recently presented with a 50 year pin in recognition of his long-standing membership in the BLE by Wisconsin State Legislative Board Chairman Keith Luebke.

Brother Ottosen began his railroad career in 1934 in water supply for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. He went firing in 1942 and was promoted to locomotive engineer in 1946.

He joined the BLE in 1947 and held the positions of Local Chairman, Secretary-Treasurer and Legislative Representative for Division 176.

Brother Ottosen made his last run on March 17, 1981. Since then, he has kept busy with his many hobbies, including: traveling, playing with his grandchildren, playing cards, golfing and washing and shining his car.

Known for his generosity, Brother Ottosen recently purchased and donated playground equipment to the child center next to his home and is a member of the A-F Basketball Club.

Brother Ottosen has two children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

"I enjoyed all the people I worked with," said Ottosen. "The BLE always protected the rights of engineers and I was proud to belong to the BLE."

BLE members planning to retire in coming months should register with the International Division in order to have their Last Run published in the Locomotive Engineers Journal.

In addition to Last Runs, Honor Rolls are published in recognition of members who have at least 40 consecutive years of BLE membership. Longtime BLE members should inquire for more details.
