GIA, BLE mourn loss of scholarship recipient

Chad Steven Garls, recipient of the 2000-2001 IWC/GIA scholarship, lost his life while on a graduation trip in Mazatlan, Sinola, Mexico, on June 6, 2000.
When Chad was in the eighth grade, he underwent open-heart surgery to replace a deformed valve. This did not slow him down. Instead, the experience gave Chad a new perspective on life - how short life really is - and motivated him to push for success in things he considered important in life.
He believed in honesty and integrity and believed that everyone had a right to his or her individuality.
Chad participated and enjoyed his talents in snowboarding and BMX racing. He was an active member of the American Bicycle Association and attended national bike races and competed with all levels of bikers. He also participated on the cross-country team and the swim team.
Academically, Chad enjoyed his art electives and his opportunity to do an internship at a local radio station. Chad planned to pursue a career in audio technology and art.
A significant experience for Chad was the recognition he received in art as a first place winner at the Wyoming State Art Symposium.
Chad also loved to write, and one of his poems is reproduced below.
Overall, Chad believed in the philosophy of "living life to the fullest with no regrets." He had goals for his future and was eager to embark on a course of action. He had been accepted and planned to attend Black Hills State University, in Spearfish, South Dakota, this fall.
Chad, the only child of Steve and Beverly Garls, was born December 25, 1981, in Pekin, Ill. In 1988, he and his family moved to Douglas, Wyo., where he graduated from Douglas High School on May 21, 2000.
Steve, Chad's father, is a locomotive engineer on the Union Pacific Railroad and member of BLE Division 31 where he serves as Local Chairman. Beverly, Chad's mother, is a member of GIA Auxiliary 31 where she serves as secretary.
A proposed Skate Park is now under construction in the city of Douglas, Wyo., in Chad's memory. The theme is "Keeping Chad's spirit in the community."
The IWC and the GIA have both made contributions to the Garls family in his memory.
