Editor's Note: In the Summer 2000 issue of the Journal,
it was erroneously reported that Brother Gary Fussell of BLE Division 366
had passed away. He is alive and well.
Mentor to many: T.R. 'Ted' Grochowski
Brother Thaddeus R. "Ted" Grochowski passed away on August
28, 2000 leaving an exemplary array of accomplishments in relation to his
family, the Brothers and Sisters of the BLE and the United States Navy.
He was 76 years old.
Brother Grochowski hired on the Pittsburgh Division of the Pennsylvania
Railroad on July 7, 1942 as a fireman and was later promoted to locomotive
engineer operating both steam and diesel locomotives in freight and passenger
service.
BLE Division 325 in Wilkinsburg, Pa. was fortunate to have him as Local
Chairman for 10 years. During this time, he assisted the General Committee
in the merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central and
later assisted with the Federal Government's creation of the Consolidated
Rail Corporation (Conrail).
During World War II, Grochowski served as a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class in
the European-African-Middle East campaigns. He received two battle stars
and he also received a battle star for convoy service in the North Atlantic.
In addition to his remarkable service in railroad and BLE matters, he
was also a remarkable family man. He and his wife, Gloria, have three children
and two grandchildren.
Brother Grochowski served as a mentor for many current BLE officers and
officials. One of the many things that he said to these BLE members was:
"Who can better represent you than you yourself, so get involved."
His involvement in the BLE and his mentoring of its future leaders will
be his greatest legacy.
The family asks that remembrances be donated to the Leukemia Society
of America Maryland Chapter, 200 East Joppa Rd., Towson, Md. 21204.
This information is based upon reports filed by the secretary-treasurers
of the various BLE Divisions.
