BLE FOCUS
A look back and a view to 2001
There were many significant events during the past 12 months that
will direct the course of our organization for years to come. And 2001 appears
to be filled with yet more hurdles the BLE must overcome as it works for
the betterment of its membership, just as it has since 1863.
National Bargaining
Since U.S. Section 6 notices were served in November of 1999, the BLE's
National Wage Committee (NWC) has met with the National Carriers' Conference
Committee (NCCC) for eight sessions, totaling 22 bargaining dates.
Legislative Issues
In 2000, several key pieces of BLE-endorsed legislation were halted in
both the House and Senate by the Republican controlled Congress.
Education & Organizing
The BLE's education and organizing resources were put to an Herculean
test early in 2000 because of the ongoing attack by the UTU.
New Techology
Members who surf the Internet have noticed quite a few changes to the
BLE website in 2000.
