Correction: In the Winter 1999 issue of the Journal, we reported that Brother J.N. Mavrikis of Division 803 had passed away. He is alive and well. We regret this error.

Former VP Joe Allen, 86

Former BLE Vice-President Joseph D. Allen, 86, died on May 3. Brother Allen was remembered for his contributions on the Erie Railroad, where he spent his entire career.

Brother Allen was born into a railroad family on March 13, 1914, in Morehead, Ky. His father was a 50-year member of BLE Division 455 (then in Lexington, Ky.) and was an engineer on the C & O Railroad in Lexington, Ky.

Prior to his railroad career, Allen served in the Army during World War II.

Allen began his railroad career as a fireman for the Erie Railroad on April 14, 1942. He was promoted to engineer on March 3, 1951 in Cleveland. He joined BLE Division 167 (Cleveland, Ohio) on Jan. 11, 1953.

From 1961 to his election as International Vice President at the Second Quinquennial Convention in 1976, Allen served as General Chairman on the Erie Railroad.

Brother Allen is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie, his two daughters Judy Petty and JoAnne Scheckel, and four grandchildren.
