Swiss engineer seeks pen pal in North America
Hello Editor:
My name is Stephan and I come from near Schaffhausen in the Northeast of Switzerland. I work as a locomotive engineer at the Swiss Federal Railroad - Cargo Division. I write to you because I am searching for locomotive engineers to contact in the U.S.A. and Canada.
I'm 24 years old and my railroad experiences extend from suburban traffic to freight traffic. I want to exchange emails about experiences and work/living conditions with locomotive engineers about the same age or older.
I am interested in your working conditions, which vehicles you operate, how the job is paid, and similar things.
I hope one of your colleagues will answer me. Thank you for your efforts.
Greetings from Switzerland!

Dear Editor:
Becky Schneider wrote a good article in the Summer 2004 Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen Journal ("Confessions of a former republican"). I could have said basically the same thing. I grew up in a conservative, Christian, Republican home and pretty much followed the same pattern as Becky - until Ronald Reagan.
What was done to the transportation industry and the Air
Traffic Controllers in particular was appalling. There were the changes
to Railroad Retirement and that horrid Presidential Emergency Board that
was forced on our industry.
Reagan was the last Republican President I voted for. I regretted that vote. Even my retired, business owner father couldn't/wouldn't vote for another Republican.
I am still conservative in many of my views, but I believe more Democrats in the House and Senate are necessary to restore balance to our government.
Thank you for all you do!
