Wallace celebrates 51 years of BLE membership

For 51 years, Brother Fred L. Wallace has been a proud member of the BLE, and if he had to do it all again, he would still join the BLE.

Brother Wallace, a member of BLE Division 197 (San Antonio, Texas), followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather by going to work for the railroad. His father, K.L. Wallace, was a yardmaster for Southern Pacific and his grandfather was killed in the line of duty while working as a conductor for the San Antonio and Arkansas Pass Railroad. His two brothers both worked as clerks in the railroad industry. One of his nephews, J.K. Besch, is also a member of BLE Division 197.

Brother Wallace began his railroad career as a fireman in 1942 at the Southern Pacific's East Yard in San Antonio. He was promoted to locomotive engineer 1945 by the Southern Pacific and he joined BLE Division 197 in 1951.

Brother Wallace retired on February 25, 1983. He received an award at that time for 38 years of injury-free service. Since his retirement, Wallace has spent his time camping, making lamps for campers, working on his model train layouts and gardening. He also belongs to a dance club.

Wallace and his wife Annette have been married for 60 years. They have two children, Freddie Ann and Judith Elaine, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Wallaces live at 102 Krupka St., Columbus, Texas 78934.
